How We Calculate Your Estimate

To find cubic yards, we first calculate the area of your project in square feet (Length × Width for rectangles). We then multiply that by your desired depth to get total cubic feet. Since there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, we divide the total by 27.

Each product uses its own catalog density and calculator buffer. If a material is sold by ton, we convert the volume into tonnage. If it is sold by cubic yard, we keep the final recommendation in cy.

Finally, we apply the product-specific buffer and round up to a whole sellable unit. That keeps the recommendation aligned with how the product is actually ordered and delivered.

Calculator FAQs

Our calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on your dimensions and then applies the product-specific buffer stored in our catalog. Ground conditions and field measurements still vary, so the rounded recommendation is meant to keep you from coming up short.
It's always better to order slightly too much than too little. Coming up short means halting your project and paying a second delivery fee for a small amount of material. Leftover material can usually be spread in low spots or integrated into other garden areas.
For kidney bean shapes or curved beds, it's best to measure the longest length and the widest width, and calculate it as a rectangle. The extra material generated by squaring off the curves serves as a perfect built-in buffer.
A cubic yard measures volume, while a ton measures weight. We still do the internal conversion when needed, but the recommendation you see is shown only in the unit that product is sold in so the final answer matches the ordering flow.
