What is Gabion Stone 4"-6" used for?

Angular granite or limestone (3–8", ASTM D6092) for gabion basket infill, erosion control, slope stabilization, and channel lining — durable heavy stone that resists water movement.

Gabion basket infill
Fill wire gabion baskets and retaining wall cages with 4–6" angular stone to create flexible, durable, self-draining retaining structures for slopes, channels, and site boundaries.
Erosion control & ditch lining
Line drainage channels, ditches, and swales with large, angular stone to absorb water energy, prevent scour, and stabilize the channel bed and banks against erosion.
Slope & embankment stabilization
Placed on cut slopes and embankment faces, gabion stone prevents surface erosion and sliding by protecting the soil surface from rainfall impact and runoff velocity.
Culvert outlet protection
Placed at culvert outlets and storm drain discharge points to dissipate water energy and prevent scour, protecting the surrounding soil and embankment structure.
Bridge abutment & retaining wall support
Placed as rip rap or gabion infill at bridge abutments and retaining structure bases to protect foundations from scour and provide lateral support against water action.
Stormwater management structures
Used in bioretention cells, detention basin outfall structures, and stormwater channels to manage high-velocity flows while maintaining permeability and natural aesthetics.
Not ideal for these applications:
  • Not ideal as a compactable pavement base (doesn't compact properly)
  • Not ideal for pedestrian or vehicle surfaces (unstable footing)
  • Not ideal for fine filtration aggregate
  • Not ideal for very high velocity water flows without geotextile backing
